Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Do you offer a sibling discount?
A: I do not offer a sibling or family discount. I keep my rates low to enable families to afford lessons. Your monthly tuition includes 4 group lessons / Master Classes per year.
Q: At what age should a child start piano lessons?
A: There are many differing opinions on what age to start piano. My opinion is to start no earlier than when the child is in first grade. This way, the child has had time to learn numbers and letters and is learning to read. Also, the child has been in a classroom setting, so sitting at the piano for 30 mins won't be taxing on them. Also, at this age, their hands are usually big enough to comfortably play the keys.
Q: Which is better: to play music by ear or to be able to read music?
A: Well... Let's pretend you are going to learn a foreign language. What would you prefer: to be able to read but not speak, or speak, but not read?
Of course, you wish to both speak and read. It's great to enjoy the beauty of a new language. It is also good to understand the grammar rules of this language. That's how I treat music.
Every music style is a new language. A good musician should be able to appreciate music, read music, play it by ear, and know how it works (Music Theory).
Q: Can I start piano lessons with a keyboard?
A: Yes. You can start lessons with only a keyboard, but I do require my students to get a piano by 9 to 12 months of lessons. A keyboard does not allow you to play with expression. There are no loud or soft notes and there is no sustaining of notes. You cannot fully learn to play the piano artistically without a piano to practice on.
